ABSTRACT
Singular optical fields generated with the so-called -cell, assembled from substrates with linear (L) and circular (C) surface alignments for the nematic director, are studied theoretically using the Jones formalism and experimentally by measuring the azimuth and ellipticity maps of the exiting light beam. The theoretical consideration predicts topologically different distributions of the major axis of the polarization ellipse (called the polarization director) for the opposite directions (from L– to C–substrate and backward) of a normally propagating light beam, called the L–C and C–L geometries, respectively. We refer to this spatial nonreciprocity with respect to the direction of light propagation as the flip-flop noninvariance of the optical field. Due to the flip-flop noninvariance, the polarization order (topological strength) of the optical singularity in the center of the pattern is predicted to be m=+1 in the L–C, while m=–1 in the C–L geometry. It is concluded that the spatially distributed optical rotation coexisting with the linear birefringence is at the heart of the flip-flop noninvariance of the singular optical field generated by the θ-cell. The experiment confirms the theoretical prediction for three different settings of the incident light polarization (00, 450, 900) with respect to the alignment direction of the L–substrate. Applying the voltage along the cell normal, we have studied the topological transformations of the exiting optical fields. The voltage-driven reorientation of the nematic director towards the cell normal is accompanied by the formation of discontinuities in the polarization director distributions. A special procedure is developed to account for discontinuities in the calculation of the polarization order. The experiment shows that the applied voltage reduces the optical rotation of the light polarization, thereby eliminating the difference between the optical fields of the beam observed in the two (L–C and C–L) geometries.
